Potential Transformer
A potential transformer or voltage transformer is basically a step-down transformer that is used in measuring very high voltages. The main function of a potential transformer is to step down the high voltages to lower voltages that can be measured by measuring instruments such as voltmeter, wattmeter and so on. The construction of this transformer is similar to that of any normal transformer but has more primary turns and much lesser or fewer secondary turns.
Potential transformers play a vital role in controlling the power systems so as to ensure the safety and reliability of the system.
