Transformer buccholz relay
Buchholz relay is a protective device that is normally seen in large oil immersed transformers .The relay is connected in between the conservator tank and transformer tank and its operation is triggered on the occurence of faults.
During faults, the core of the transformer gets heated up and decomposes the oil present in it. As a result, gas bubbles are produced inside the transformer. These gas bubbles moves up and down and turn ON mercury switch which in turn triggers the alarm circuit and trip circuit based on the severity of the faults. Hence, buchholz relay is a gas operated relay that protects the transformer from both minor and major faults by detecting the faults and triggering the protection devices.
